Up on Jets at GITMO
This is a work in progress (but stalled) ... I drew this illustration with an original photo taken when Sherman at flank speed. Sherman was engaged in a USN anti aircraft drill during GITMO training. During the drill, our Mount 51 amazingly scored a succession of bulls-eyes on a metal target being towed by a Navy Prop plane, As I remeber, not only did we hit the target we even knocked off a couple chunks of the towing cable ... I think this photo was taken when a Navy Jet did some close fly bys to remind Sherman who was boss after we destroyed their target. I not sure of the details, but scuttle butt had us attempting to track the jet when it buzzed us with our gunfire director and because of the jet's great speed, the GFD the ran the 51 mount into its stops violently ... The jet was just too fast for our WW2 vintage equipment to track... So this is where I need some expert advice to put a narrative with this illustration ..Is this story accurate? Any Gunners Mates remember the details? At any rate, I sure love drawing the Sherman's rooster tail and the sun on the ocean ...
