Sailors To The End, Gregory A Freeman

Incredible detailed story of the fatal fire aboard the USS Forestal.  Yankee Station,  Vietnam 1967.

Not having a damage control billet on the Sherman, I remember being amazed as I watched DC Teams walking through that black curtain of smoke going down into the engine room fire off Boston. That situation turned out well due to the courage of our DC Teams.

This story onboard Forestal does not turn out nearly as well.  But the DC Teams and all hands fought a tremendous fire and explosions with true courage and bravery, saving the ship from a fire that could well have consumed her.  A good read, under 300 pages.
