Hawaii Reunion / Decommissioning / 50th Year Anniversary of Sherman

Posted by Richard Ames on August 15, 2017 at 2:25 PM

Sherman Breaking news.

Jack Schneider shared an email from Captain Steven Wittrock, CO of the Sherman. Jack and I just got off the phone after much discussion about our plans of action. This is a call to action for our Sherman crew(s) interested in the Hawaii Reunion / Decommissioning / 50th Year Anniversary of Sherman's Honorable service: More to come soon! What follows is Captain Whittrocks email concerning our Cutter's near future!:

Greetings from the Arctic.

I thought I would check in and let you know that as of right now we still on track for a decommissioning right at the end of March, probably about the 30th. I believe they are just working to finalize the date.

We have been keeping very busy up here in the Arctic and she is still running well with no lost ops days, thanks to the hard work of the Engineers. At the bottom of the e-mail are a couple of articles on our endeavors up here.

Very respectfully,
Capt S Wittrock
CGC Sherman

Not knowing when or if there would be a Sherman Reunion or decommissioning, my wife booked us an open ended room at the Hilton in Honolulu for 2018. We planned to try to see the Sherman, if at all possible, during her 50th birthday.
We will confirm our room (6 nights) as soon as you know what is taking place.
Thank you Richard and Jack for bringing me my 75th birthday present (3/18).

A second note, I made two, 2 month, Alaskan fisheries patrols to the Aleutian Islands aboard the Dexter and a third one aboard the Barataria, after she returned from Viet Nam, before being assigned to the Sherman precommissioning crew. I remember Dutch Harbor fondly. Our crew kept looking for the promised woman behind every tree on the islands.

Hello Jim Smigie!!!
Great to hear you are going to Hawaii - Looking forward to the event and seeing you and the rest of our crew there in 2018!
We are working with the Sherman's active crew, They will be sending out formal invitations and we have been told that the Sherman Assn is near the top of their list!

Yes this an really important "bucket List" event for me and I'm sure in the lives of many of our Sherman Shimates!

Semper Paratus!
